Decontamination of contaminated land and industrial plants

Reliable protection in extreme working environments
1000 hectares of land in Europe are decontaminated every year. This includes “brownfields” – areas of land that have been traditionally used for industrial or agricultural purposes, forestry or mining activities, and military or armament sites from the 1 st and 2 nd world wars.

A frightening number of contaminants
Often harsh environments to work in, decontaminated land sites can present various hazards at various stages that require of a garment not only reliable protection but a high level of comfort and a good fit to enable wearers to perform at their best ! The following tables summarise examples of typical hazardous components to which employees may be exposed when involved in land decontamination or decommissioning of buildings.

Product/Material  Potentially hazardous components
Concrete additives  Hydrocarbon solvents
 Damp proof materials  Solvents, Bitumens
 Adhesives  Solvents, Isocyanates
 Road surfacing  Tar based emulsions
 Asbestos  Respiratable fibre
 Mineral fibres  Respiratable fibre
Treated timber  Copper, Arsenic, Chrome, Tar, Pesticides, Fungicides
 Fire resistant wastings  Halogenated compounds
Paint and coatings  Lead, Chromium, Vanadium, Solvents
 Power transfer equipment  PCBs

Safety is key
When faced with a multitude of hazards, proper garment selection is a key element in worker safety. Different factors such as concentration, temperature, pressure and other environmental factors significantly impact the barrier performance of chemical protective clothing for specific hazards. But don’t worry - the DuPont Techline team offers support and guidance in finding exactly the right protective clothing solution for your needs.

Trustworthy chemical protection in extreme environments
TYVEK® and TYCHEM® garments are tough, lightweight and available in a wide range of sizes. Garments are tear and abrasion resistant, maintaining the protection level throughout the application because the barrier fabric remains intact.
How does the protective barrier of your garment perform when the garment is worn ?

Our demo test illustrates the behaviour of protective clothing materials in terms of abrasion, after mechanical loading :
TYVEK® garment :
- No damage
- No impairment of the barrier

Microporous film material
– Damage (holes)
– Barrier no longer provided

Design - not just a matter of appearance
The overall design of a garment is a critical element to be factored into any assessment of a garment’s protective performance. Design is not simply a synonym for appearance. It has a major role to play in the garment’s fit and performance. Have you ever tried to slip a protective glove under the sleeve of a suit – and failed ? Has a protective suit you were wearing ever torn at the crotch ? Have the seams of a suit ever burst open as you were moving ?

Protective suits from DuPont are designed to ensure maximum comfort and freedom of movement. All DuPont manufactured garments undergo a visual quality control.

The use of TYVEK® and TYCHEM® protective clothing in explosion-risk zones
Decontamination or decommissioning work often involves working in explosive zones and/or confined spaces that can generate a high level of stress.
DuPont commissioned the Swiss Safety Institute (Basel) to carry out tests to investigate the use of TYVEK® and TYCHEM® protective clothing in explosion risk zones.

This Table shows the situations in which clothing made of TYVEK® and TYCHEM® can safely be used : i.e when the green checkmark appears for both the zone and the explosion group.

Following garments could be used for this application* :
TYVEK® Classic, model CHA5, Type 5, 6
TYVEK® Classic Plus, model CHA5, Type 4B, 5, 6.
TYCHEM® C Standard with socks, model CHA6, Type 3B, 4, 5, 6.
TYCHEM® F Standard with socks, model CHA6, Type 3B, 4, 5, 6.
TYCHEM® C2, model CHZ5 , Type 3B, 4, 5, 6
TYCHEM® F2, model CHZ5 , Type 3B, 4, 5, 6

*Whether a TYCHEM® / TYVEK® protective garment would be suitable for the specific conditions of an application can only be determined by the enduser himself.
